Speakin’ On Truth From The Old School On Down To The Youth
Water and Advil. Water and Advil. Water and Advil…I think I’ve finally recovered from the VIMBY launch party Wednesday night at Safari Sam’s, due to a heavy dose of agua and over -the-counter painkillers. If VIMBY keeps delivering amazing events like the launch party, and we will, ad dollars from the likes of Advil/Aleve/Tylenol/Bayer appear to be more than appropriate. Actually if we’re going to explore my minor addictions further, some sort of advertising-for-goods transaction should be going down with the Coffee Bean, Diet Coke, the Heineken Brewing Co, etc. The party was a smashing good time, with equally smashing perfs from Bedtime For Toys, Wounded Cougar, The Willowz, Paul Dateh w/DJ Inka One, Unique, and DJs Mid City West and Sean Patrick. Bedtime dropped 80’s party science. The Coagars featured a dude on the cowbell throwing down ninja moves like a Halloween masochist. The Willowz squashed one of our cameramen under a stack of amps while their set went to guitar apocalypse mode. Unique dropped a VIMBY tribute freestyle; original versions gave me a shout out but alas, I was a victim of the cutting room floor. That’s alright, sniff sniff… Paul, Inka and the DJs ushered in the VIMBY era with their funky selves getting our drunken booties bopping, no small feat for a rock club in the 99 cent store parking lot. We’re all coming back for more on 11/28 at the same scene of the crime; stay tuned to VIMBY.COM for more details as we reassemble the wreckage.
But now it’s time to move on, live in the IS not the WAS and plan for the future. Here are some tips for your upcoming dance card:
FUJIYA & MIYAGI After the Beasties LA gig a month or so ago, I drove my friends down the hill at the Greek to F&M’s “Ankle Injuries”. I doubt anyone in the car had heard the track before, but we were all bopping our heads and pop-locking like it was 1985. These guys are a thinking man’s/woman’s electronic collective, with grooves that get under your skin in improbable but effective ways. Last night (shucks) @ Echoplex/Los Angeles; 10/16 @ Club Deville/Austin.

EULOGIES are Peter Walker, who used to operate as a solo artist with a couple fine albums under his belt, along with the gregarious and approachable Tim Hutton on bass and Chris Reynolds on the skins. You will not find two sweeter guys in the music biz than Peter and Timmy, and it’s nice to see them get some love on this new project. One of the first times I saw Walker perform as a solo artist, at the Silverlake Lounge, he opened with Neil Young’s “Revolution Blues” and that was all I needed to hear to respect his talents and musical references. Check out their myspace page for a full compliment of tour dates but here are some coming up this week: 10/16 @ Emo’s/Austin; 10/17 @ The Cavern/Dallas; 10/19 @ The Earl/Atlanta, GA; 10/21 @ R&R Hotel/Washington DC.
The 1900s are from Chicago. 1990s don’t have a “the” in front of their name and are from Glasgow. Both are fine indie rock bands with not much else in common other than their names. I think despite their musical prowess they will run into issues for rock dominance with confusion over their similar names, but Hootie sold like 12 million copies of that album back in the day and are now shilling for Burger King, so perhaps names are irrelevant. For now we’ll focus on the sunny bounce of the 1900s and suggest you brighten your day by seeing them in your town in the next couple weeks. NY & NJ area plays 10/14-18; 10/20 @ Beachland Ballroom/Cleveland; 10/27-28 in Los Angeles. For complete listings go HERE
