Diggin N the Crates: J Dillas Original Samples
I used to try to produce beats on Fruity Loops back in my high school days (obviously it got me no where), and sampling classic’s was always something I wanted to learn how to do. The Late Great J Dilla was an expert on sampling beats to create his own dope beats. I am a big time Slum Village fan, and I always wanted to find out where he sampled all those beats from. Some of them are oldies, but I discovered a couple hip-hop beats he sampled like Mood (Hi-Tek) for one of my favorite SV tracks, “Climax”. I went on to discover where he found many of his samples, and it kept getting more and more amazing. I recently downloaded this “SV: The Originals (Fantastic Vol. 2)” mix, which opened my eyes to even more. As most of you know, J Dilla did more then produce for Slum Village. So I discovered this page with a list of many of the samples he used and a download link to each one. It’s interesting to see where he found everything and how he made it his own.
My favorites?

Also, there is this new digipack with “a continuous mix of funk & soul as sampled by J DILLA”. So this isn’t a mix by J DILLA, but rather a mix of tracks that J DILLA has sampled and used. A dope blend of 23 old soul ballads & funk tracks with some offbeat drop ins and scratches. You can listed to this dope mix HERE or buy it HERE
