VIMBY Exclusive Interview with Weekend Warriors

 wknd_warrior

Let’s get intimate with my girls, Desi and Bri from Weekend Warriors. I met the ladies recently at our 1 Year Anniversary Party in Hollywood, and I heard all about them previously from my girl Amy over at C’est La Vie. The girls came over to the Vimby Headquarters for champagne and cake the next day, and they gave me the low down on their new upcoming line. I was really impressed, and I wanted to know more. Their designs are unlike any other of the ladies streetwear brands out there.  These ladies are definitely on the come up, so watch out.

Introducing Bri (right) and Desi (left)

Pauline: Tell us a little about yourselves.

Desi: I’m a twenty something, self taught graphics artist, that was raised in the Bay Area. Super chill ex-ballerina that has no filter for her misandrist mouth.

Bri: I’m the tomboy, tattoo addict, potty-mouth brat from Stockton, California. Really laid back and go with the flow but not afraid to express my point of view. Soon to be a student at FIDM.

Pauline: Who are your design influences?

Desi: Definitely music, films and everyday occurrences. There are many high end designers that I favor but that they influences a different aspect other than streetwear; Yves Saint Laurent, Michael Kors, Betsey Johnson.

Bri: I’ll take a whole day and throw on movies. That’s where i get a lot of influence from; or just from a song played in my car. But mostly are designs are personal. That’s what I’m hoping everyone appreciates because the designs are based on our personalities and situations. We just want to relate to every woman out there.

Pauline: What types of women rock Weekend Warrior?

Bri: Any type of woman. Even though we’re all different in so many ways from each-other every woman has something in common. Just the everyday woman that works hard during the week and knows how to kick back and enjoy herself on the weekends.

Desi: All types women. Women of different shapes, sizes, colors, past experiences, morals, personal triumphs, or downfalls.

Pauline: What’s playing in your iPod’s right now? Are there any music artists female or male, that influence your every day lifestyles?

Desi: At this very moment… I have the Blueprint 2: The Curse Rotating. Music influences everything I do; in order to function I NEED music. Esthero, Jay-Z, Diz Gibran, Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple and Portishead to name a few.

Bri: Music is my life! But I’m a big Jay-Z fan. All his albums are on my iTouch. Nas, Diz Gibran, Pac Div, Common, Erykah Badu [you better call tyrone!], Lil Kim, Joe Budden is the man, Shyne, Beyonce when I’m feeling all independent, I could go on for days. While I’m typing right now Ihave T.I. rotating. His TI vs TIP album. That’s what I listen to when I’m feeling a little hostile, haha. There’s this kid Fashawn out of Fresno who’s really caught my ear lately as well.

Pauline: What differentiates your line from other streetwear ladies brands out there?

Desi:I don’t know about others but this line is very personal to us. We embody everything we put out.

Bri: When Desi and I decided to do this together we both had the concept of something a guy would wear but for a girl. We were always talking about how we had to grab smalls in our fam’s lines because they were only for guys. We wanted to come at a different angle with it. Switch roles I guess you could say.

Pauline: What can we expect from Weekend Warriors in the future?

Bri: We have a lot of ideas cooking up but trying to take it one step at a time and get it how it comes. We’ve been out here in L.A for a few days discussing ideas with friends and you might see something very different coming from us in the future.

Desi: Maaaaaaan. We have some great things in store. You’ll just have to keep your eyes peeled.

Pauline: How’d you come up with the Weekend Warrior idea?

Desi: We wanted to give women a new voice. The whole line is based on the things we both go through. At times a woman is not considered a “woman” when expressing themselves the way we do. that’s all just a bunch of s**t.

Bri: Me and Desi are always told we’re very different. We’re real chill but we’re not afraid to express how we feel about a situation. For some reason there’s a perspective out there about women and how to “act like a lady.” I wasn’t raised to bite my tongue with a man and conform. My mother was very strong. So we want to be the bad guys for the ladies and be able to say all the things that they think they can’t say out loud. We’re a different kind of feminist.

Pauline: I love the “Pussy Prevails” slogan, explain what that means.

Bri: I always say women have all the power. We just have to know how to use it. We’re smart as hell yet we’re expected to dumb it down so we don’t bruise the male ego. When a girl gains success or does good for herself i always hear “it’s because she’s a woman. She has it easy.” that’s not the truth. We have to work ten times harder to be taken seriously and when we get there I plan on letting that be known. I will not conform to the man’s world.

Desi: Its funny because “pussy prevails” actually came into play after dealing with the male species one day. I remember telling Bri the story and then ending the conversation with “pussy prevails!” in any instance… pussy does prevail. I haven’t came across a man that has denied that fact. as women we work hard to get where we are. A man may fight it until the day that they die but a woman can make a man fall in any instant.

Pauline: Weekend Warrior has came out with some fresh T-Shirts this season. Do you guys plan on designing any other types of clothing or accessories?

Desi: Ever since I was little I have had this weird obsession with the needle and thread. We definitely plan on coming out with one of kind pieces, accessories and other ventures.

Bri:
We both have a passion for all types of styles and clothing. having the same vision for our business is great yet we’re different and it makes the happy medium. But yes we will soon branch off to other things.

Pauline: Where can the ladies purchase Weekend Warrior gear?

Desi: Weekend warriors will be released within the next two weeks within boutiques and our upcoming online shop. Keep up with the blog for updates.

Pauline: Any last minute shout outs?

Desi: Big ups goes out to all of our blog readers, weekend warriors wearers, all of mentors and to everyone who didn’t take us seriously in the beginning.

Bri: Everyone that’s been supporting us. The love is overwhelming. To all the ladies out there vibe’n with our first season [it will be released soon], and to all our friends and mentors, your input is always taken to heart. Oh and shout out to tbaby! Cuz it’s so cold in the D! hahaha.
